Job Title: Ultrasound Engineering Intern
Location: Higher Bockhampton
Duration: Part-time or Full-time, Temporary
Salary: £21,000 pro-rata
What will I be doing?
The successful candidate will work as part of a team to support the day-to-day operations of the business. This may include but is not limited to manufacturing, product design/development, calibration services, regulatory measurement services, and software development. The intern will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and will be supported by experienced engineers and scientists. This role requires a strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn.
Placement structure
Three technical teams exist within Precision Acoustics; Measurements, Sensors and Software & Systems.
The Measurements team is responsible for the quality and precision of ultrasonic transducers and pressure measurement products offered by Precision Acoustics. This involves hydrophone calibrations traceable to National standards, as well as acoustic output characterisation of ultrasonic transducers. The team also supports equipment manufacturers by offering comprehensive acoustic measurement services for both medical and non-medical ultrasound transducers. These services are essential for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of ultrasonic equipment, as well as regulatory approval from the appropriate authorities. Working within this team will involve hands-on experience calibrating ultrasonic measurement equipment and using automated test tanks to characterise medical ultrasonic fields and quantify beam profiles for non-destructive testing.
The Sensors team specialises in the design, development and manufacture of ultrasonic transducers. These may be used for industrial applications, such as non-destructive testing (NDT), medical research or a variety of cutting-edge applications within academia. Designs are underpinned by a knowledge of the physical principles of acoustics along with an understanding of mechanical engineering. Working within this team will involve hands-on practical tasks within our in-house workshop and manufacturing facilities for which full training will be given and all necessary PPE (personal protection equipment) will be provided.
The Software & Systems team specialises in the design and development of systems and accompanying software control applications for the characterisation of ultrasound. The team is uniquely positioned: developing products for external customers whilst simultaneously supporting internal production and measurement processes. The team primarily develops software using LabVIEW, a proprietary graphical coding language supported by National Instruments. Working within this multidisciplinary team will involve a blend of software development activities applying widely accepted industry practices such as object-oriented design and agile methodologies alongside system design activities including electrical and mechanical aspects.
To begin with, the successful candidate will spend a month in each team experiencing all aspects of team life. Following this initial exploration, the management team will review with the candidate and subsequently select an appropriate team that the candidate will spend the remaining 9 months working in. The assigned team manager will act as mentor for the placement to support the candidate’s professional development. This programme structure will not only provide the candidate the opportunity to gather insights into the dynamics and functions of the business as a whole but also the experience of working on a larger-scale project.
What skills and experience do I need?
· Currently enrolled in a relevant STEM field of study, such as physics, engineering, or chemistry
· Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn
· Excellent organizational skills
· Ability to work as part of a team and to follow work instructions
· Ability to maintain accurate records and to meet deadlines
· Familiarity with laboratory equipment and practices is a plus, but not required
Where will I be working?
This role is based at our Higher Bockhampton headquarters near Dorchester in Dorset. As Precision Acoustics is based in a semi-rural location, applicants may want to explore accommodation options in nearby towns like Dorchester, which is approximately a 10-20 minute commute away. Additionally, you may consider towns like Weymouth (20-30 minute commute), Poole (40-50 minutes), and Bournemouth (45-60 minutes), which offer a variety of housing options to suit your preferences.
